Two weeks after breaking my ankle and subsequent surgery I hobbled into Ellen’s healing room.

A month prior Ellen, on a healing quest to cure her breast cancer leaves Fort Lauderdale, travels to Esalen Institute in California to meet with Don Oscar. Fun fact, Don Oscar lives up the road in Palm Beach, Florida.

Hobbling into the room on crutches a beautiful altar is laid out on the floor… the air is buzzing. Teetering trying to keep my balance with the ankle still in a cast. “Look here” the shaman says, “right between my eyes, now don’t look away.”

Taking swigs from one of the bottles he spit-sprays the liquid elixir mist all over me as the scent of flowers fills the space within and around me.

Staring at me he says “You have trained with many people of power, now it’s time for you to carry your own medicine bag.”

The next session the power song starts flowing through me as gifts to clients during their soul retrieval sessions.

A decade after the “index card experience” my helping ally- one of the names on the index card- tells me it’s time to learn heart centered shamanic Depossession, so I travel to Wisconsin to be in the circle.

I’m also here to visit the Indian mounds. They’re calling me. After checking into my room, putting the suitcase on the bed I look out the window as the sun is setting…. The deep indigo blue-sky contrasts with the dusty rust-golden colored wheat field.

WHAM.
It’s the EXACT SAME LANDSCAPE SCENE as the painted index card.
Whoa. Que the Twilight Zone music.

Everyone’s buzzing with excitement as we exit the bus at the effigy mounds. I walk up the path with reverence, quietly singing and rattling… before I know it, I’m walking in two worlds…I’m also seeing water and hearing the words “What happened to the water?”

In the “LONG Before” I’m seeing the verdant green mounds are surrounded by water; there are hollowed-out boats arriving for the rituals and celebrations. There’s dancing, singing and drumming. So much joy. When it’s time to leave the mounds that day I give thanks for the visions, the spirits of the land and the gifts bestowed.

Later that evening the teacher asks the circle to set up an experiential representation of the mounds in the meeting room. Everyone takes their assigned place…

The room is pitch dark, there’s only candlelight on the altar.

My ally says, “why is no one singing?”

“You’re representing the 13th moon.”

I’m standing on the 13th mound. 13 mounds representing the 13 moons. As I rattle…. a song is rising… I question….

“NOW, really?”

“YES! SING”, she replies. Sing the song of the “LONG Before”…. into the future.

Throwing off my cloak of anonymity… I feel someone next to me; my eyes slightly open as the teacher puts her recording device at my feet.

After the session I’m buzzing with energy…expanded. Other people in the circle are now coming up touching me. It’s uncomfortable.

The next morning the teacher asks if I’m willing to set up the experiential mound in the meeting room again this evening using my recorded “LONG Before” power song.

“No, that’s not going to work for me.” Even though she’s disappointed I hold firm to the boundary.

“People are asking for the song. Can I release the song to the students who are here?”

“Can you teach me how to unhook from people psychically reaching in while listening to the power song?”

My question is met with silence. It’s a big NO.

Now fifteen years later I understand it’s all a dance; I’m learning the steps as a newbie medium, how to hold a clear yes and a clear no. My energetic body was not ready to hold that space for others, that will come with time.

Within a year I’m singing power songs and sending them out into my community at each new moon. Playing in the “Long Before.”

Yesterday I learned from a Facebook post that the effigy mounds thousands of years ago, in the “Long Before” were indeed surrounded by water.

In Aquarius you are called to be the pioneer… to gather up our stories… from the “there and then” and the “here and now”; these are seeds asking to be planted. The world needs the power of our songs.

I am the One who is an Interstellar Magi dancing in the “LONG Before.”

Years ago in a breathwork session I had a vision of sitting in church and knowing God within. Not because what the pastor told me, it came from my near-death experience as a child; my connection to nature and walking the shamanic path of direct experience. Everyone in the congregation during that vision also came from this place of god\goddess from within. It was an extraordinary heart opening experience.

This week a student I adore was judged for walking her own path of direct experience….in response this is what I shared:

In the mid-90’s essential oils were laughed at by the muggles. Today those that laughed or held disdain are pitching them all over social media. What is new will scare people and then it becomes the norm. Are you on the path of cutting edge stuff?

You’re a change agent. A way shower.

This month is an opportunity to root out the times you’ve taken the weirdness on as a wrongness of you. Journal about it. I suggest doing the dead wood ritual (click here) to let it go. To transform and transmute the energy. Take back your power.

If what you offer your clients,
if the tools you use are unconventional
and done in love.
There’s no wrongness in that.

Be you.
Go be seen, by choice.
Not by chance.

There are those waking up- aka coming of age- that need to hear this from me, from you. They may be crossing into territory deemed wrong, bad, the devil’s work.

Waking up is hard because you have to surrender the generational trauma-beliefs that are deeply ingrained… in thought, in the cells, in the breath and body of you.

AQUARIUS.

When the sun moves through this sign it highlights this weirdness among the muggles. This is the sign where you get to break out of the collective shell. Create in a new way. Innovate.

It’s also a place fraught with judgement.

“It’s the way we’ve always done it….”
“don’t go that way.”
“stay the same.”
“it’s dangerous to think that way.”

You my friend are an explorer of new frontiers.
Boldly going where your intuition asks you to.
A full body knowing…. honoring that life pulse within you.

A powerful presence, Cliff is a tall, strong, kind African American healer I met at the Barbara Brennan School of Healing. For a while I did everything in my power to avoid him, which only made the situation worse. He freaked me out and shook me to the core. When he tried to catch up to me on breaks  I’d run away. I was being stalked. Finally realizing the craziness of it all I started pulling on the thread of feelings bubbling up using shamanic healing, journaling and collaging helped me find the why.

Spring of ’68, at that crossroad of change, not girl/not woman I was bullied in school by a tall black teenager held back because of grades. It was the year of busing, of race riots and the assassination of Martin Luther King. Boy-man intimated the teacher by shouting her down when he got an F on a test. Nothing was done. Sitting at his desk when the teacher wasn’t looking he’d turn around with laughing eyes and voice a whisper threatening “You watch out girl, I’m gonna take you out in the woods and mess with you at lunch today”. My life was hell in 6th grade.

Cliff reawakened that bully experience.

Once I understood “the why” I had lunch with Cliff. Our conversation turned to power. Working with African elders (shamans) he saw a dark side of shamanism- control and manipulation.

As a healer, Cliff was scared of his shamanic gifts that were opening up. Sharing his mission and movement I started to cry. He was here to heal the rage in African American boys, the experiences that shaped my bully.

Power was stalking us.

When the stars lined up Cliff’s presence woke me up to a deeper truth. That each experience, even bullying, brings with it a gift and a blessing. Every part of this experience fills me with gratitude. Healing comes in layers. Many times we think we’re done, another layer is revealed when we least expect it. Your invitation is to dive deep.

Transform. Shed what no longer works for you. What’s bubbling up? What needs attention?

NOTE: This post was inspired by an NPR interview on Bullying. While driving in the car my stalkers name came bubbling up this morning, so I decided to do a internet search. He’s in jail, had numerous run-ins with the law. Seeing his picture I felt compassion. No charge to it. It is done.

“Children who are bullied are four times more likely to have an anxiety disorder as a young adult, compared with people who were not bullied. Now, that might not surprise some people, but you’ve found, as you just said, that people who both bullied other kids and were victims fared even worse. They were 14 times more likely to develop panic disorders as adults.” Within a year of the trauma I started developing symptoms of PTSD and panic disorder that was healed through shamanism and the soul retrieval process.

Freedom

To remove any encumbrance. State of being free. Release from imprisonment. Ease of movement. Choose action freely.  Independence. Know that there is an energy shift in your favor. Obstacles no longer need to stay in the way. Simply acknowledge their removal.

Release yourself from obligation. If you look closely, most of it is self-inflicted anyway. Chose to free yourself. Claim your power. Reclaim your independence. Exercise your free will in the situation. A time when the usual laws of constriction do no apply. Things may move easily for you now.

A time to look clearly at what or who has bound you. What is holding you back? Take steps to let it go. Unbind yourself- the time is right. A very powerful energy. Hindrance and obstacles are at a low- there is no need to be in opposition.-Juliet Hubbs in the Universal Cards.

Dear Ellen today would have been your 61st birthday. Did you hear me listening to the two wonderful shamanic women talking about taking people to Peru?

Did you show up because I was beating myself up for being all ’emo’ and wounded?

I went deep yesterday, made a couple SoulCollage® cards. Started laughing when I cleaned out my purse and found the little stone frog you gave me on your last journey to Peru. I miss you, yet I know you are close because I hear you laughing even as I write this. ..in honor of your life and the legacy that lives within all of your circle I am sharing our story.

Written 7/5/2005:

This is a story of freedom related to the legacy we leave as healers. Some people step into your life and change you forever. Free you up. One of those people in my life is Ellen Collier. Back in 1997 Dr. Bob, my chiropractor and friend said ‘you need to see Ellen.’ My husband and I were separating because I was  ‘too spiritual’.

My life was in crisis in so many ways. Ways I had not shown up for myself, ways I was holding myself back to be in relationship. Dr. Bob in the middle of his patient room put on a pretend superman cape, and flew around the room. Joyfully explaining that Ellen would teach me to fly, she would expect me to own my power, to fly beside her. A true spiritual warrior he said.

Dr. Bob warned me if I tried to attached to Ellen’s cape, it wouldn’t work, she’d demand I fly with my own cape, and she’d show me how to do it. I had been through therapy, been through shamanic training and somehow these fragmented pieces within needed to come together.  At the time my intuitive gifts were reawakening/restructuring and I didn’t understand what was happening.

Then I met Ellen.

I knew there was magic afoot when I first drive into the driveway. I know a person by the home they keep. Her land sparkles.  She sparkles. Old Chicago brick walkways, exotic plants, birds and trees. Ancient statue pieces, found on her many trips to Mexico lovingly placed, peeking out at me in the most unexpected places. Later I found out that Ellen had dug and laid the pathways herself, designed the pool, planted the trees and exotic gardens all infused with Spirit with intent, focus and purpose.  Ellen and her husband live in an older section of Fort Lauderdale, in the city. Huge trees grace her property, peacocks roam in the neighborhood.

Ellen is a pipe carrier, a mesa carrier,  a healer, a shaman, a curandera. Earth mother.

She taught me that laughter is as healing as crying- to put the ‘fun’ back in dysfunctional. She explained gifted spiritual teachers have huge shadows, and taught me how to see and read between the lines. She helped me make sense of the transition and integrate in the world behind my eyes. She helped me clearly see the should’s of my past, and where I was still hooked in.

Finally Ellen encouraged me to start working with clients, to come out into the world. To write, create and share. The first time I sang in tongues during a session, she said ‘Michele, that is your soul voice, use it.’ 

When I broke my ankle and was in a cast she challenged me yet again– ‘Michele you have to see clients and run groups- here are some of my clients who want to do group work, here’s my home. Just do it.’ Broken ankle and all. No excuses. In 1999 Ellen was diagnosed with breast cancer but that didn’t stop her. The week before her chemo treatments started I drove up to find the exterior of her Casa now painted a deep bright blue and  parrot green. It so worked, it is so Ellen.

She painted her whole house- going from off-whites to tropical greens, blues and pinks- she laughingly shared as she answered the door- ‘I need more color in my life.’ Ellen introduced me to the Peruvian Mesa- another layer of the Great Work. After treatments she went on to take many trips to Peru, worked with plant medicines, traveled to ancient sites doing the cosmic earth work she loves with indigenous shamans.

Her cape took her to many places. I interviewed her for my thesis- Home as a Reflection of Self:

“Healing is now effortless for me in this space I have created; I just get out of the way and allow Spirit to work through me. I honor my limits (rhythm); I let go of the control and open up to the outcome. Cancer and death does that to a person.”

Ellen’s awakening married the modalities of shamanism, traditional medicine and the alchemical promise. Her own disconnection and reconnection with her essential self mirrors a path of becoming that most of us run away from.  She admits to being out of harmony with herself which lead to the breakdown of her physical body and breakthrough of her spirit. The journey opening up a deeper connection to Nature. Illness became the catalyst for a spiritual transformation to even deeper levels than had existed within her psyche before the diagnosis.

Shamans are made through tests and trials by fire, there is a tempering that happens much like the alchemical process of separating the base metal from the gold, burning off the dross to find the Spirit. Earth, air, water and fire are in us and around us, the alchemist knows this. Ellen knows this. From lead to gold Ellen’s journey has tempered her spirit becoming a container for soul made manifest on earth- she is a bearer of Light.

She is my teacher, my mentor, the older sister I never had but always wanted. Nothing I write can put into worlds how the power of Ellen’s presence impacts my life. I love her dearly.

When the doctors’ found cancer in Ellen’s body (they had missed it in 1999)  she went through treatments, wanting to live, wanting to do the work.

I am going to live this life ‘til this life won’t let me live here anymore. Then I’ll walk with patience, yes I’ll walk with patience right through that open door. I have no fears, Angels follow me wherever I may go.– song from Big & Rich

After a courageous fight Ellen wrote family and friends she is in a state of tender surrender accepting her death. A sweet goodbye.  I feel sad. I feel secure in knowing that her legacy flows within me- that I lovingly share with family, friends and clients. She taught me how to build a container for shamanic wisdom, to stand in my power, to use my voice.  I feel grateful for her presence. Her presence that touches so many of us. So many stories to share. So many blessings.

Capricorn asks us to be disciplined and responsible especially when we are called to be healers. When we walk a healing path, our task is to understand not only the intuitive, but also the rational. To be both/and not either/or. To manifest one’s hopes wishes and dreams we must be grounded- so very Capricorn.

It’s about HEART and SOUL Grounded in her own knowing a healer frees herself and lives her dream. A woman must first embrace and embody her the Moon and the Great Mother;  to understand her own emotional nature, understand her connection to the earth and sky and all the elements, understand and feel safe expressing her intuitive gifts, love her self, home and family, move through the shadow and the valley of death to embrace the rebirth. Even in death walk through that open door.

The last conversation Ellen laughingly said to me “I’ll see you twinkling in the stars.” I have my cape. Ellen here’s to the wonder you created! Surrounded in love, drum and song.

Ellen peacefully flew Home on July 28th, 2005. Her wish . . . “be joyful and send me love.”

Along the way just past Orlando I notice a strange FedEx tractor trailer with three sea turtles painted on the back of the cab…This special FedEx truck is one of many trucks rescuing 70,000 precious sea turtle eggs from Gulf regions.

The truck is outfitted to minimize shaking and climate cooled. On the back of cab the trucks have sea turtles painted in purple bodies shaped like hearts. It made me cry. Thank you FedEx for stepping up!

Sunday at the New Moon/Solar Eclipse Carol and I led a Healing for the Gulf waters using principles from the Medicine for the Earth work. It’s always fun to hang out with Carol, but it was even more fun holding sacred space together.

“In the beginning, all waters and lands were sacred. You honored the waters and lands, for your very survival depended upon intimate knowledge of their rhythms. From your love and gratitude, the waters and lands created great abundance. Your waters and lands have been desecrated – feed them, cherish them, remember they are sacred and they will become powerful again.”-Message from the Spirits of the Waters and Lands

I ‘heard’ take the Gaian deck just before I left…I hadn’t opened up the cards (okay the packaging was just too beautiful to open and I’ve been savoring it). The deck sat on my altar gathering energy waiting for the ‘right moment’ and this New Moon in Cancer certainly felt right!

The Cancer energies are all about feeling, care taking and honoring the momma Earth, especially the sacred waters. It was fun holding the deck for the first time, feeling into the images, then asking and finding what cards wanted to be present on the altar to honor the four directions.

During the healing ceremony we transfigured and the next day Carol took the blessed water to the Gulf,

Joanna’s deck offers earth wisdom in a profound way, each card evokes a wonderful story to share – the artistic birth took her nine years! After setting up the altar, seeing the images, we laughed because the altar took on the shape of a sea turtle once everything was in place. Spirit works in magical ways.

I’ve heard so many stories of snakes showing up in peoples lives,
snakes shedding skins, snake energy being very visible. There is an invitation from Spirit (the God/Goddess of your understanding) to stay aware of how nature is communicating, it’s a powerful time…

After each new moon you’ll face issues that are in your way related to the energy of the moment-Cancer. Take advantage of the signs and signals the Universe is offering. This week watch what’s unfolding off the new moon energies, it’s a time of journaling and connecting, expanding into the next highest version of you with LOVE!

Nancy called last month close to the holidays. She’d committed to a Platinum level marketing program, had bills that needed to be paid and not much in cash coming in. Ready to take a bold leap forward with all the good ideas percolating Nancy was stopped by old fears.

Fear does not help you manifest a dream or make money…fear shuts you down and spins your wheels. Nancy wanted to be more intuitive and trust her inner guidance. She called me…

Right timing meets right action meets Resistance.

First off Nancy dug deep into my powerful Saturn in Libra Journal while I looked at Nancy’s birth chart. I saw the problem right away and performed a shamanic journey on her behalf for a diagnosis.

During our sessions I continued to do both shamanic healing and coaching. In collaboration she healed from her soul loss, began discerning true wisdom from the mind chatter.

And magically doors opened…coaching clients signed up, within 30 days she is making “good” money and being asked to joint venture on some wonderful new projects. She wrote this week:

“Michele I love how you use the Moon’s energies to support me. I wonder if talking to you twice a month would make sense. Plus I just LOVE your work!!  I love how you use imagery with me and I love the healings!!”

Speaking with one of my new Coaching clients we got to talking about ancestors and altars. She’s starting a new project, and yes an altar to honor the event is in order.

As an interior designer I set up little vignettes around our home to delight and inspire me.

Once upon a time my mother was looking at houses for sale; on the phone she shared “The woman was very spiritual at the house I looked at today.”

“Why do you think that Mom?”

“Well she had altars in her home just like you do.”

Before my Feng Shui training I never looked at my little vignettes as altars, but after our conversation saw Mom was right. This post today about is about- Angels, Ancestors and Acorns…

Archangel Gabriel and the Lessirard Ancestor Altar– Grounded by Gabriel’s presence (a carved primitive wooden angel that stands three feet tall)…at the base brightly colored glazed clay acorns are from a thrift store lie across the bark skin of a log. Compassionate Ancestors for my husband and our daughter; a picture of Joseph, my husband’s father who passed in 1977 and his Grandma Pauline.

In Nazi France Grandma Pauline saved her children by refusing to give up the family milk to the Nazis soldiers. A sweetheart of the woman she raised rabbits until her death a month before her 102nd birthday.

On that day she came in from feeding the rabbits, said to her daughter “my mother’s come for me, she’s standing right here.” Her daughter said “oh go sit down mother you’re being ridiculous.” She sat down in her easy chair…closed her eyes and passed over. I love Grandma Pauline.

1. Inspirational Mood Board– 4 by 4 fabric covered tack board where I pin projects and ideas I am working on in the studio. For me it’s a gigantic vision board and an altar to design ideas and inspirations. This Christmas Dear Daughter gave me this wonderful handmade fabric garland- I just love it!
2. Acorns. Acorns. Acorns. My sister Lisa sent me a Texas Acorn (on the left) for Christmas. My little Florida Acorn is on the right and the Green Man is watching over the seeds. I love oak trees and acorns- the tree represents the energy of grounding, strength and fortitude.
3. Inner Child Altar…starts with a collage I painted in Claudine Hellmuth’s beeswax class from a photo of my mother at eight years old using crayons and McCall’s pattern tissue paper.

The collage is flanked by little thumbprint clay angels- Michele, Kelly and Lisa. I bought the little angels at the Lake Eola Crafts Festival with Mom
and Nana (she’s also 102 years old this year) back in the eighties. The Gourd Lady from North Carolina is there too. Creating an Inner Child altar invites the spirit of Play into your life especially when you are taking life way too serious.

“The power of the altar lies in it’s visual appearance. The structure and objects of altar appeal to our psyche because they give form to the formless and provide a visual representation of the divine.” -Denise Linn, Altars.

In times of natural disasters or trauma an altar helps you manage the grief. As an empath (artists, healers) natural disasters impact our energetic body. Since the destruction in Haiti you may be feeling scattered and grieving. An altar allows you to channel the grief and can be used to send healing energy by focusing your good will.

Building your Altar:

Prepare your space by deciding where you want to place the items. For the cloth you can start with an scarf or bandanna. Get quiet and go inward. Ask what needs to be present then look around your home and in your yard for items that represent your new vision.

The invitation is to be mindful and present.

If you’re ‘got’ by the problem, the fix is to get out and walk, fill your lungs with some fresh air. Create a sacred space by lighting a candle and set the intention. Go BOLD declare you want a solution NOW. Not later.

Grab a magazine or two, rip out the images that call to you. Glue down those images…stand back take a look and start dialoging.

I guarantee your answers will appear.

Play. Let the God within you and around you express what you are feeling in this moment through the images. Give the energy- good, bad and ugly a voice. Teach you how to navigate these waters.

Open up and allow Spirit and Nature to infuse you, inspire you through this…

Let go and allow the energy of the Universe, those compassionate Masters and Angels who are with us to drop in and just be- with me, with you.

Guide me. Teach me, so I can empower you…
